New details have been disclosed connected to a shooting that wounded two people near the Crave Bar in Wheeling Township that is being investigated by the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department. Following the shooting around 1:55 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023 in the parking lot at Crave bar at Rand Road and Hintz Road, a homeowner later in the day found bullet holes from a single bullet in his home on Harvard Avenue in Arlington Heights — just northeast of the bar.
A resident in the block of 2700 North Harvard Avenue called police about 8:16 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, and then described to Arlington Heights police that a loud bang was heard at the home around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, 2023. The family dog came rushing into “the room” and the man calling police believed the dog had just dropped “the bone” on the floor. The resident did not notice or observe the damage connected to the loud bang at that time.
Later on Saturday, the resident observed a small hole located in a bedroom in the home. Police did not disclose the location of the bedroom, and who might have been sleeping in the bedroom. According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, a second hole was located in the bedroom on the opposite side of the bed into a closet. The resident began to remove items from the closet immediately prior to calling 911 about 8:16 p.m. Saturday.
Arlington Heights police arrived, and walked the homeowners’ property with the homeowners and observed a small hole on the exterior of the residence facing west. The hole appeared to be into the vinyl-type siding, and continued into the bedroom. The bed was set against the southwest corner of the bedroom, and a single hole was located approximately one to two feet above the headboard of the bed through pink colored cloth or drapes. The bullet penetrated the drywall and left white dust on the “wall side” of the pink drapes.
On the opposite side of the bedroom a second hole was located that appeared to be diagonally aligned in the direction of travel through the bedroom. The second point of entry along the path was located on the closet wall to the left of the closet door framing. Via combined examination of the holes, the bullet trajectory appeared to continue through the closest wall and into the interior of the closet itself. There were no other holes located in the closet, which indicated the bullet did not penetrate further into the house beyond the closet.
Arlington Heights police contacted the lead investigative agency, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, in regards to the findings due to the report of the shooting that had occurred during the overnight hours from June 30, 2023 into July 1, 2023 in the parking lot of “The Crave”.
A Cook County Sheriff’s Lieutenant and Sergeant responded to the Harvard Avenue address within Arlington Heights village limits Saturday night, and evaluated the findings. Cook County Sheriff’s officers reviewed the damage caused, and agreed with an Arlington Heights police officer that the damage was most likely caused by the overnight shooting.
Cook County Sheriff’s personnel checked the closet, and located a single bullet/round intact and collected it for evidence. They also dispatched a detective to the scene on Harvard Avenue to follow up with the homeowners regarding the shooting incident.
Following the updated findings on Saturday night, the homeowners were determined to sign complaints if the offender is identified. The homeowners advised police they don’t have any cameras in their backyard.
