No injuries were reported after a report of a tornado touchdown north of Bowes Road and west of Randall Road Wednesday evening, July 12, 2023. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the area to help residents, and a MABAS Box Alarm for Division 2 was activated to assign mutual aid firefighters with equipment to the scene. Staging was located near Menards on Randall Road. The Kane County Office of Emergency Management also responded to the scene.
Elgin public works crews provided an impressive response beginning the process to restore the tornado-damaged neighborhood in the Edgewater by Dell Webb gated community. Large pieces of frames from homes were removed, along with trees and other debris.
A lamp post was plastered by insulation and/or pulverized drywall, and an air conditioner was ripped from the base at the side of a house. The air conditioner was also peppered with insulation bits and pieces.
An end-loader was used to fill debris into a dump truck. The Elgin Forestry Department also brought out a large dump truck, and an entire tree was picked up by a crane and placed in a large size dump truck.
Chopper 2 and Kris Habermehl were over a neighborhood in Elgin where a tornado caused extensive damage to several homes Wednesday night. According to the City of Elgin, tornado sirens were activated Wednesday evening at 6:20 p.m. Shortly afterwards, reports of a tornado touchdown in the Edgewater (Del Webb) subdivision at Bowes and Randall Roads, were received by the City’s Emergency Operations Center. Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the area at 6:28 p.m.
Nineteen homes in the vicinity of the 2800 block of Stoney Creek Drive were affected. Ten homes sustained significant damage and nine sustained cosmetic damage. A canvass of the area confirmed that all residents were accounted for and no injuries are being reported.
The area remained closed overnight with Elgin Police and Kane County Sheriff personnel onsite. Kane County Office of Emergency Management is assisting with relocating affected residents who have not been able to make alternative housing arrangements.
Elgin’s Emergency Operations Center was taking calls to address issues. Residents were advised to continue to call 911 if there were any issues.
City crews continued to assess damage from Wednesday night’s reported tornado in the Edgewater (Del Webb) subdivision at Bowes and Randall Roads, and were focused on addressing the needs of the residents who have been displaced from their homes, according to the City of Elgin.
At least four drones were up in the air over the streets in the Edgewater neighborhood around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday — assessing damage and/or gathering photo or video images.

The areas that suffered the most damage are all south of South Street and west of McLean Blvd. The College Green neighborhood took a fair amount of damage along a few streets.
Mission Hills Drive, Balmoral Drive, Harbor Town Drive, and Annandale Drive were discovered with broken and uprooted trees.
The Columbine neighborhood had some damage as well as the neighborhoods west of Edgewater such as Waterford, Copper Springs, and the Shadow Hill neighborhoods. Large chunks of insulation were located along Longcommon Parkway between the Edgewater neighborhood and the Waterford neighborhood. Elgin Fire Station 7 is located nearby at the south end of Longcommon Parkway just north of Bowes Road. The damaged neighborhoods are located in the southwest area of Elgin near Campton Hills and South Elgin.
At the conclusion of work last night, all the roads and driveways were clear and passable. Elgin city crews worked to clear the brush from parkways Thursday morning and are expecting to continue removal work until all the brush is removed.
