The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District released information on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 that a house fire was reported at 9:06 a.m. Tuesday in the block of 1300 North Hickory Avenue, and that an investigation is pending regarding the cause of the fire. On Friday, July 21, 2023, the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District provided information on Facebook that showed a copy of a press release from Ashley Furniture with an “Important Safety Notice” accompanied by a photo of a burnt frame of a sofa from the house fire. Three product types (a Sofa, a Loveseat, and a Recliner) include a cupholder with LED lighting that can overheat, posing a fire hazard, according to Ashley Furniture. The product recall was issued on June 8, 2023.
Consumers were advised to immediately unplug the electrical cord(s) to the product. The remedy for the recall is repair work.

This is to inform you of a product recall of the Ashley Furniture Industries, LLC-branded Party Time Loveseat, Recliner, and Sofa (the “Power Recliners”), which are manufactured by a third party. Pictures of the Power Recliners are shown below. The products were manufactured by Happy Smart Furnishings and Colia Leather and sold between November 2018 and March 2023.
This product recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada because the Power Recliners’ cupholder with LED lighting can overheat, posing a fire hazard. You should immediately unplug the electrical cord(s) to the product. You can contact Ashley Furniture Industries, LLC for a free replacement with a newly-designed cupholder installed by a technician. Please note that other Ashley Furniture Industries, LLC products are NOT affected by this recall.
Fire investigators are focusing their attention on a Party Time Collection Sofa, which has three seats in one unit. There is built-in LED lighting in a cupholder, touch button control with USB charging, and docking station for charging electronics, according features listed on various stores with catalogue listings including the sofa.
An Ashley furniture single-seat chair recliner, and a two-seat love seat recliner with the LED lighting feature are also part of the product recall.
The listing for the seating are available from multiple furniture stores nationwide, but the party time sofa is not currently available on the Ashley Furniture website. The products were available at Ashley Homestores and other furniture stores nationwide and online at Ashleyfurniture.com from November 2018 through March 2023, and cost between $900 and $1,800. About 253,000 units were sold in the United States, and about 9,450 were sold in Canada, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District firefighters responded at 9:06 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023 to report of a structure fire in the block of 1300 N. Hickory Avenue in Round Lake Beach. Initial reports were that smoke was coming from the residence.
Fire units arrive in less than six minutes and found the lights smoke coming from the roof eaves of the structure. Fire companies made entry and found heavy smoke conditions as well as significant heat and fire damage. Apparently the fire had burned for a while before it consumed the oxygen required sustain significant combustion. Fire crew successfully applied water to the remaining hotspots and extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported to occupants or firefighters. The investigation was initially pending as to what caused the fire, but the investigation is focused on the Ashley Furniture sofa recliner.
Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District firefighters were assisted at the scene by firefighters from Gracelake Fire Protection District, Fox Lake Fire Protection District, Lake Villa Fire Protection District, and Wauconda Fire Protection District. Also, firefighters from Antioch, McHenry City, and Mundelein provided coverage in fire stations for the district during the fire fighting operations.
