The Village of Antioch Police Department has obtained a search warrant and secured possession of the carnival ride involved in Sunday’s incident at the Taste of Antioch, where a 10-year-old boy was thrown from the ride. This is part of the department’s ongoing criminal investigation into the incident.
On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, the Illinois Department of Labor (ILDOL) concluded its follow-up inspection of the Moby Dick ride, which is owned and has been operated by All Around Amusement, of Lockport, Illinois. Throughout the entire inspection process, ILDOL worked collaboratively with Antioch Police Detectives. Following the conclusion of the inspection this afternoon, based on information from the IDOL Inspectors, Antioch Police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow directed detectives to work with the Lake County States Attorney’s office to immediately apply for a search warrant to secure possession of the ride as part of the ongoing criminal investigation into the incident.
The ILDOL inspections began Sunday afternoon in Antioch, hours after the incident. On Monday, All Around Amusement moved the ride from Antioch to a storage facility in south suburban Shorewood, where the inspection process by ILDOL continued. Following the most recent inspection, the Antioch Police Department obtained a search warrant from a Lake County judge which allowed the Antioch Police detectives to seize the ride as evidence in the criminal investigation. This evening the police department is overseeing the ride’s transport from Shorewood back to Antioch.
Antioch Police Guttschow says the criminal investigation into the accident is still active and ongoing.
“Our detectives have been working along with inspectors from the Illinois Department of Labor to determine if any criminally reckless or negligent acts may have contributed to the accident. The outcome of this week’s inspections of the ride necessitated us to immediately secure it as evidence as part of the criminal investigation.”

As the investigation continues, the Antioch Police Department asks that anyone who may have witnessed unsafe actions by carnival workers or equipment during the Taste of Summer email Antioch Police Detectives at: [email protected].
Police Ask Public to Respect Victim’s Privacy
In the interest of respecting the privacy of the child involved in the accident, the Antioch Police Department will not be providing any further public updates about his condition. His road to recovery will take a significant amount of time, and we wish for the family to focus on his well-being, which is all of our utmost concern. The family will have discretion and control over what they choose to share with the community moving forward. We ask everyone to please respect their privacy.
GOFUNDME …
Uncle Robert Pohlman has established a gofundme account to raise funds for medical treatment of his nephew Huntley, who was thrown from the Moby Dick carnival ride at Taste of Antioch on Sunday, July 16, 2023.
The gofundme fundraiser is asking people for help to raise funds for medical treatment and future surgical treatment that is expected.
Hi, my name is Robert. I’m his uncle. On July 16th at around 3pm my nephew was flung from a carnival ride approximately 10-20 feet in the air. He was flown through flight for life twice to two separate hospitals due to the care needed. My sister and his father will be out of work for a time that will make paying for the unknown amount of surgery my nephew will need, almost impossible. Anything helps, funds will be used to pay medical fees and if there’s any left over, that will be saved for him when he recovers.
Thank you for your time, compassion and donation.
He’s a strong kid. He once broke his arm and pushed the bone back in, on his own because “it didn’t hurt”. Truly remarkable kid.
NOTE: gofundme was reporting an “Unknown Error” Monday afternoon for several gofundme accounts checked by CARDINAL NEWS. The website downdetector.com is also reporting a spike in outages for gofundme beginning about 4:00 p.m. CT.

Witness Elliott Johnson of Round Lake Heights said that during possibly the third time around on the ride, the child “almost did like a dive with his arms down and his legs straight” outside the gate near the ride. Johnson explained that during the ride his own harness was moving up, and he would slam down the harness to close it so he wouldn’t fall out.
There are previous reports of injuries on ridesdatabase.org that indicate problems with the harness bar striking people during exit or entry to the ride.
