A man suffered a head injury and is in critical condition after being struck in the face with a commercial grade firework in unincorporated east Cary.
Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Cary Fire Protection District responded about 9:15 p.m. July 2, 2023 to a report of a seriously injured man hit by a firework detonation near a residence in the block of 24400 Hickory Nut Grove Road in unincorporated Cary just west of the Fox River. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the 58-year-old man in and out of consciousness. The man then lost consciousness with major injuries to his head.
Cary Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics transported their patient to Northwestern Medicine – McHenry Hospital where the LifeNet helicopter station/hangar is located nearby. The LifeNet crew was assigned to meet the arriving patient at the pad at their hangar. The LifeNet helicopter crew transported the patient to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was listed in critical condition.
Preliminary investigation indicates the man came to a gathering at the Hickory Nut Grove address near the intersection with Kristy Lane south of Three Oaks Road/Fox River Road. Before he was injured, he brought numerous commercially-rated fireworks, which require a permit to possess and detonate. The man was detonating the fireworks for those at the gathering. He lit a firework, which did not launch or detonate as expected. The man looked into the tube that was housing the fireworks device, and it discharged or launched into his face. When the fireworks rocket struck his face, the rocket exploded and caused the critical injuries.
Police found several unexploded commercial grade fireworks, which were collected by Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and transferred to the Waukegan Bomb Squad for destruction.
Criminal charges are possible.
