Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies with police officers and paramedics from Waukegan responded about 2:00 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2023 to the 1800 block of North Sheridan Road, Waukegan, after a Chicago resident critically injured himself with a severe laceration when he punched a window at a bar in the 37800 block of North Sheridan Road, Beach Park.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a 32-year-old man of Chicago with a major arm wound. The man was transported to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Preliminary investigation shows the man was at the bar on Sheridan Road and got into a verbal altercation with another person. The man was escorted out of the bar by security. After being escorted outside, the man punched his fist through a window near the front door. This caused to sustain a severe laceration to his arm and bleed significantly.
The man asked a friend who was at the bar to drive him to the hospital. While on the way to the hospital, the man went in and out of consciousness. After regaining consciousness at one point, the man grabbed the wheel of the car, causing the driver to strike a curb and a trashcan, which disabled the car’s ability to drive. Police, firefighters and paramedics from Waukegan responded to the scene of the disabled vehicle, which was near Bowen Park, 1800 North Sheridan Road in Waukegan. The man was transported to Vista Medical Center East where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives continue to investigate, however, the injury the man sustained appears to be self-inflicted.
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Banks of Chicago. An autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Monday, July 17, 2023. Autopsy results indicate that Mr. Banks died from sharp force injuries.
