DuPage County Sheriff’s Office requested emergency assistance about 12:25 a.m. Sunday, June 18, 2023 to a report of shots fired in a group of about 200 or 300 people near the Willowbrook shopping center at Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane in Willowbrook. Police officers in the area heard the shots fired and then discovered shooting victims. Police used their own medic bags before paramedics could contact the victims. There was some difficulty for paramedics getting their ambulances to patients as they tried to navigate through the crowd to access the shooting victims.
Police reported finding a gunshot victim near Route 83 at about 12:32 a.m., and then a second gunshot victim at about 12:33 a.m. Overnight the DuPage County Sheriff’s investigation discovered at least 20 people had been shot. Two of the victims that survived were critically injured. The rest of the injured suffered mostly minor injuries or graze wounds. Approximately ten people were transported by paramedics. The rest arrived at hospitals on their own.
The DuPage County Sheriffs office confirmed that one person was deceased, but did not confirm whether any suspect(s) or suspect’s vehicles are in custody. The DuPage County Sheriffs office also did not indicate a motive for the shooting, or a description of any kind of disturbance that may or may not have occurred before the shooting.
The injured people were transported to several hospitals in DuPage County, Cook County, and Will County. The ages and conditions of the victims were not initially released at a press conference that occurred on a roadside on the east side of Route 83 across from the strip mall shopping center where the shooting occurred.
The people on scene during the shooting were celebrating a Juneteenth weekend ahead of Monday’s official day. Some hid in their cars when the shooting started.
Several police departments assisted DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputies at the scene overnight — including Bensenville, Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills, Cook County Sheriff’s police, Darien, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Illinois State Police troopers, Melrose Park, Oak Brook, Villa Park, Westmont, Wheaton, Willowbrook, and more.
The mass shooting incident investigation is being coordinated by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office and MERIT (Metropolitan Emergency Response, Investigations Team – Major Crimes Component).
There are several focused areas of the on-scene investigation, including the north end of the parking lot, the center of the parking lot, and a far south end area of the parking lot near a parking lot driveway.
Southbound Route 83 was closed overnight at 91st Street. Multiple police’s were parked from Honeysuckle Rose to 91st Street on the southbound shoulder of Route 83 at 1:15 a.m. Sunday.
The crime scene remained active as of 8:50 a.m.
