Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:02 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023 to a report of fire coming from a manhole near the intersection of Golf Road and Arlington Heights Road. Then at 6:04 a.m. Mount Prospect firefighters and paramedics responded to a report of a wire down with flames near the parkway near Golf Road and Meier Road in Mount Prospect. The actual location of the fire was discovered to be at the Meier Road location about 2000 feet east of the fire department assignment Golf Road and Arlington Heights Road.
Additional Mount Prospect firefighters were assigned to the scene to assist with control of a grass fire in the area. At 6:20 a.m. the incident was upgraded for additional crews (a Code 3) when firefighters suspected an underground gas leak as well as downed power lines. Fire command requested Nicor to the scene because an active fire was fueled by Nicor gas.
Golf Road was shut down in both directions between Goebbert Road and Meier Road from east Arlington Heights into Mount Prospect. Access to Lonnquist Boulevard to Meier Road was also shut down. Later in the day eastbound Golf Road was opened to traffic. Nicor worked at the scene for most of the day underground to repair a gas leak at the north parkway of Golf Road, and westbound Golf Road remained closed at least until around 5:00 p.m. The Village of Mount Prospect used dump trucks to block Golf Road. There was no notification (via websites, Facebook or Twitter) from the Village of Mount Prospect, the police department or the fire department regarding the incident, repair work, or the road closure involving Golf Road.
Over 350 ComEd customers were without power initially, but by 9:40 a.m. fewer than five customers were without power with one outage in the 60005 zip code, according to ComEd. The ComEd outage map was not available Saturday morning, but was back online by Saturday evening.
There was no information regarding whether any Nicor gas customers were affected during the repair of the gas leak. CARDINAL NEWS was not aware of any evacuations ordered.
Police and firefighters were called back to the scene at Golf Road and Meier Road about 6:11 a.m. Sunday for a report of sparks seen, but a police officer reported there was no problem at the scene Sunday morning.
The information in this article is an initial report published before any summary information was confirmed or released by police or fire authorities or witness on the scene.
