AIR QUALITY ALERT …
…AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT CDT TONIGHT…
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has determined that an air pollution action day will be declared for the greater Chicago Metropolitan Area today and is in effect until midnight CDT tonight.
An air pollution action day is declared when weather conditions are such that widespread ozone and or particulate levels are expected to be at or above the unhealthy for sensitive groups category of the air quality index.
Active children and adults especially people with pulmonary or respiratory disease such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor activity.
Area residents are urged to reduce pollution levels. Air quality forecasts and tips on how you can reduce your emissions can be found at www.airnow.gov.
Although the AQI (Air Quality Index) is a little lower (in the 70s to 90s) than in past several days (over 100), the ozone levels are forecast to be elevated to meet a criteria for an air quality alert. Nearby, ozone was highest near Naperville, Aurora, and Madison, Wisconsin. In recent days the primary pollutant has been particulate matter PM2.5 or particulate matter with diameter 2.5 μm or less.
Also, the continued dry conditions in combination with winds gusting upwards of 25 to 30 mph this afternoon will make for an elevated risk of grass and brush fire spread.
Astronomical summer began at 9:57 AM CDT Wednesday, June 21, 2023 with the Summer Solstice, which marks when those in the Northern Hemisphere experience the longest day of the year. At our latitude, this means nearly 15 hours and 14 minutes of daylight today.
SUMMER SOLSTICE …
Summer Solstice Irony
The warmest temperatures of the year aren’t normally around summer solstice. The warmest days of the year range from around July 12 to July 22 in Chicagoland due to a process known as heat lag — the earth and nearby waters gain peak heat after the summer solstice. The earliest sunrise is not today. The earliest sunrise 5:14 a.m. CDT occurred this year from June 12 to June 17, 2023.
The latest sunset of 8:29 p.m. CDT occurs today but continues through July 3, 2023.
The earth is not closest to the sun; it is actually furthest from the sun during the northern hemisphere summer.
Weather Radar in northeast Illinois was clear at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
