The much broadcast and published lake enhanced cold front or ‘pneumonia front’ is racing south across Lake Michigan early Tuesday afternoon. Temperatures ahead of the front are warming into the mid to upper 70s and low 80s this afternoon. The forecast for the cold front arrival time remains unchanged from the morning update with the expectation that it reaches far northeast Illinois between 4-5pm, Chicago between 5-6pm, and northwest Indiana and the outer Illinois suburbs 6-7pm.
Arlington Heights and surround communities will probably begin to notice the drop about 6:00 p.m., but temperatures could drop ahead of schedule.
A slightly earlier arrival of the cold front is possible. Take a jacket or a hoodie to prepared for a 15-20+ degree drop and gusty winds to 20-30 mph in the immediate wake of the cold frontal passage.
The air temperature is forecast to drop to 60°F by 7:00 p.m. at O’Hare International Airport.
Lows tonight dip into the lower-mid 40s north of I-88 and upper 40s to near 50 south.

A lake enhanced cold front may bring a brief period of northerly wind gusts up to 35 to 40 mph to parts of northeast Illinois this evening, especially near Lake Michigan. In addition to the gusty winds, expect rapidly falling temperatures behind the front.
