Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Elk Grove Village responded about 8:19 a.m. Sunday, April 2, 2023 to a report of a garbage truck on fire at Groot Recycling & Wast – East, 2500 Landmeier Road in Elk Grove Village. An off-duty firefighter leaving work noticed the fire and called 9-1-1. The fire quickly spread to two other garbage trucks and then a fourth garbage truck while firefighters were extinguishing the fire.
The fire call upgraded to a Working Fire by 8:23 a.m. One or more of the garbage trucks may have been fueled with Compress Natural Gas (CNG), and there may have been fire or venting involving the CNG tanks. Thick black smoke and flames were visible at the scene.
Firefighters used two 1-1/2″ lines, a 2-1/2″ line on the fire, and also a deck gun on the fire by 8:33 a.m. At least one other line might have been added by about 8:42 a.m.
A Chicago Fire Department ARFF (airport crash truck) and a Bensenville ladder truck also assigned to the scene.
Winds were from the south around 9 to 10 MPH around the time of the fire, and the air temperature was about 34°F to 36°F around the time firefighters were extinguishing the fire.
