Offenders took over an intersection with their vehicles early Sunday morning in Maywood, and lit a fire in the intersection about 1:09 a.m. Sunday, April 9, 2023. The fire only involved rubbish, and the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived about 1:25 a.m. The offenders obstructed the intersection.
Just before 1:09 a.m. police were following a 4-door black sedan from Chicago. The driver was traveling with his headlights out, and was occasionally driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver was northbound on 1st Avenue in Maywood, and then stopped in a crowd of vehicles where there was an intersection takeover at 1st Avenue and Chicago Avenue. Rubbish was lit on fire at about 1:09 a.m.
Maywood firefighters responded to the fire, but the fire involving rubbish was out upon their arrival just before their arrival at 1:25 a.m. Sunday.
Initially, there was no information whether police engaged the offenders, or whether there were any arrests. It is also unknown if the intersection takeover was already underway, or whether the intersection takeover was formed to attempt to help the driver of the black sedan evade police.
Takeovers at an intersection, which are illegal, may include automotive stunts, blocking traffic, impeding the normal flow of vehicles, endangering the safety of motorists and pedestrians, accidental personal injury, deaths, assault and battery, and other forms of illegal behavior, including vandalism or damaging property. Police departments are coordinating efforts to counteract unruly crowds, including confiscation or impounding of vehicles used in intersection takeovers.
Takeovers are also known as sideshows, and often include automotive stunts known as doughnuts and ghostriding, which are often captured on video and shared on social media.
Doughnuts involve turning a vehicle in a tight circle while maintaining continuous motion, which usually leaves circular skid marks on the road.
A doughnut occurs when a driver intentionally spins their vehicle in a controlled manner, usually a circular pattern or a figure eight in large unoccupied parking lots. The driver techniques coordinate steering, throttle control, and handbrake (e-brake) manipulation to induce the vehicle to spin in a circle.
Vehicle “ghostriding,” is also known as “ghost riding the whip” which involves a person intentionally exiting a moving vehicle and allowing it to continue moving while the driver walks or dances alongside their moving vehicle. The driver might also climb onto the exterior of the moving vehicle or perform other actions while the vehicle is in motion.
