Initially two Chicago firefighters were transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after a firefighter was reported down during firefighting operations at an apartment house fire on Wallace Street just south of 120th Street in Chicago early Tuesday morning. One of the firefighters was transported with life-threatening injuries, and was pronounced dead Tuesday morning. According to the Chicago Fire Department, one firefighter was transported in Code Red condition, and another firefighter was transported in Code Yellow “Stable” condition. Chicago Fire Department reported later that a third firefighter in stable condition was transported by paramedics from the fire scene.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 3:23 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023 to a report of a fire at an apartment house in the block of 12000 South Wallace Street in Chicago. Engine 75’s crew on arrival reported they had a fire. The fire scene involved a 2 1/2-story frame, 25×50 square with heavy fire on the second floor and attic, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
A short time after arrival of firefighters, the fire was spreading to an apartment house next-door. The fire incident response was elevated to a Still and Box Alarm at about 3:33 a.m., and a 2-11 Alarm at about 4:01 a.m. A firefighter was missing, and a 3-11 Alarm, Mayday, and EMS Plan 1 was activated at about 4:05 a.m. A firefighter reported “down” was located about 4:10 a.m. CPR was administered at the scene.
The fire also damaged a third building. Initially information indicates that two adults and two children were displaced by the fire.
