Swatting Hoax

Police officers and firefighters and paramedics from Barrington responded about 1:05 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2023 to a report of a bomb threat at Barrington High School, 616 West Main Street in Barrington. Students and staff were evacuated from the building on Monday.

Firefighters were standing by while police investigated the threat.

The Cook County Bomb Squad, a Chicago Police Department bomb-sniffing K-9 squad, and several police department near Barrington also responded to Barrington High School.

At 1:18 p.m. there was no public message regarding any incident on the Barrington High School website or Facebook page.

The Barrington High School was notified at 3:34 p.m. that the Cook County Bomb Squad searched the campus and determined that the school building was safe for the return of students and staff on Tuesday.

The following updated message was sent on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 4:45 p.m. to the Barrington 220 community on behalf of Barrington 220 and the Barrington Police Department:

Dear Barrington 220 Community,
We wanted to provide an update about the bomb threats that occurred at Barrington High School earlier today. The Cook County Bomb Squad completed a search of the campus and has determined that it is safe for students and staff to return to school on Tuesday, April 18. The campus will remain closed tonight.

Police have confirmed this event is related to a growing hoax trend known as “swatting,” which has been occurring in school districts across the country.

We understand that events like this can cause stress and anxiety; therefore, school psychologists, counselors, and social workers will be available on Tuesday for anyone who wishes to speak to them.
All testing that was scheduled for BHS students in any of their classes on Tuesday, April 18 will be rescheduled. BHS students will receive further guidance from their teachers during the school day on Tuesday.
