Countryside Fire Protection District firefighters and paramedics and Vernon Hills police officers responded about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, March 19, 2023 to an activated alarm and then multiple calls of an apartment fire in the block of 900 South Court of Shorewood in Vernon Hills. Firefighters on arrival discovered smoke showing from the second and third floor with heavy fire conditions.
As crews were responding, a 911 call was received reporting a fire with the possibility of people trapped. One or two people were reported to be attempting to escape the fire on a third floor balcony on the west side of the building at the back of the building (south side). While working to extinguish the fire and searching for people, two victims were located. One adult victim was found deceased, and another adult victim was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where the person was pronounced dead. The identities of the victims were initially unknown, according to the Vernon Hills Police Department.
The fire incident was upgraded to a MABAS Division Box Alarm about 3:30 a.m. and a Second Level Box Alarm at about 4:09 a.m.
For the Box Alarm, firefighters, paramedics and/or command officers from Deerfield, Grayslake, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, Long Grove Fire Protection District, Mundelein, North Chicago, and Round Lake Fire Protection District were assigned to the scene. The Round Lake Fire Protection District ambulance was initially assigned change of quarters, but was immediately moved up to the scene.
Also for the Box Alarm, firefighters, paramedics and command officers from Buffalo Grove, Inverness, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest were assigned to change of quarters.
For the Second Level Box Alarm, firefighters, paramedics, investigators and/or command officers from Arlington Heights, Gurnee, Lake Zurich, Palatine, Wauconda, Waukegan were assigned to were assigned to the scene.
The fire was extinguished, however the building is uninhabitable. The extra alarms were struck out at about 4:34 a.m.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Countryside Fire Protection District, Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Vernon Hills Police Department.
The Red Cross is working to provide assistance to displaced occupants.
