According to Palatine Fire Department, the fire department response was upgraded to a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) alarm at 5:47 p.m. which brought firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) resources from multiple agencies in the surrounding area. At approximately 5:48 p.m. there was a rapid change in fire conditions and partial roof collapse that resulted in the separation of fire crews and a Mayday was called. Firefighters on the scene rapidly deployed a portable ground ladder to a firefighter on a third-floor balcony. The firefighter safely exited the balcony and the Mayday was canceled.
Firefighting operations continued for the next couple of hours and the fire was declared under control at 8:37 p.m. The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out at 10:05 p.m. Fire department crews remained on the scene until approximately 6:00 a.m., Monday morning to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
A total of twenty-two residential units were damaged by fire, smoke, and water and were declared uninhabitable Sunday until further notice. The Palatine Police Department and the Red Cross were on the scene to assist displaced residents in finding temporary shelter. The Salvation Army provided food, beverages, and warming kits for the firefighters.
No civilians or firefighters were injured during this incident.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment, or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of any fire. In an emergency, do not delay exiting the home to search for pets or any other belongings.
— Palatine Fire Department
