A missing hawk that resides in captivity, and cannot survive in the wild was found apparently healthy Tuesday, March 14, 2023.
Lake County Forest Preserves environmental educators Monday, March 13, 2023 were asking for the public’s help in locating a red-tailed hawk that had been missing after its home was vandalized at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods. The red-tailed hawk was found apparently healthy on a 6-foot high tree stump near the hawk’s home at Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods.
Environmental educators surrounded the red-tailed hawk, which is education ambassador for the Lake County Forest Preserves. The hawk was rescued successfully.
The male hawk, used for education programming, is not releasable into the wild, and cannot survive in the wild due to a left-wing injury that affects his flight, according to Lake County Forest Preserves. Lake County Forest Preserves staff has permits and skills to care for the animal.
The staff had completed thorough searches at Ryerson, yesterday, and later enlisted the help of the public to be on the lookout for the hawk. Then today, a Lake County Forest Preserves volunteer found the Red-Tailed Hawk.
