Ryan Keeler, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and former Nazareth Academy defensive lineman has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 20, according to a release from the university’s athletic department.
The UNLV football program announced Monday evening, February 22, 2023, that defensive end Ryan Keeler had died. Initially, no cause of death was provided. According to a CBS Chicago news report, Keeler’s coach at Nazareth Academy Tim Racki heard that Keeler “passed away in his sleep.”
“We are devastated to have lost a member of our Rebel family. While I had the honor of knowing Ryan for only a couple of months, he already stood out to our coaching staff as an incredible person, student and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Ryan’s family as we grieve along with them over this tremendous loss.”
— UNLV head coach Barry Odom
Ryan Keeler played high school football at Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park. The defensive lineman was a three-star recruit, contributing to the La Grange Park Roadrunners’ progression to a Class 7A state championship in 2018 as a sophomore. In 2019 he participated as a junior in the team’s runner-up finish to the state championship.
Words are hard to come by this evening as we grieve the sudden and tragic loss of UNLV student-athlete Ryan Keeler. My sincere condolences are with Ryan's family, friends, loved ones, and teammates during this very difficult time. https://t.co/jSxYX7jWvO
