Zion police responded about 12:12 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2023 to a report of a man attacking a woman with a gun in the block of 2700 Hebron Avenue for a report of a man attacking a woman with a gun. When Zion police officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old female victim who reported that her ex-boyfriend struck her in the face with a pistol causing injury. The ex-boyfriend, a parolee, fled the scene prior to police arriving but was identified as 28-year-old Michael White from Zion. Officers searched the area and put out a county wide alert for White but were unable to locate him. The female victim was relocated at her request to a house in the block of 1600 Barnhart Court with other family members.

Five hours later at approximately 5:13 a.m., Zion Police received a 911 call reporting that White was at the Barnhart Court address threatening the same female victim with a gun. This 911 call was received from a third party who was not at the Barnhart Court address. Zion police officers responded and tried to make contact with the occupants in the residence and locate White. The person who answered the door was unaware that White was in her house, but permitted officers to search for him. For safety purposes while the residence was searched, officers began evacuating the 15 occupants, including multiple children that were reportedly inside. During this evacuation, a single gunshot was heard from inside a bedroom.

Police officers gave commands for anyone in the bedroom to come out. Eventually White came out of the bedroom and surrendered, giving up the firearm he had with him. When police officers went into the bedroom, they located the same female victim from the Hebron Avenue incident earlier. She was found deceased with a gunshot wound to her head.

Zion Detectives and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force responded to the scene to investigate. This case was reviewed by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and two counts of first degree murder charges were approved for White. Michael White appeared in bond court Thursday, January 19, 2023, and was ordered held on $10 Million bond (10%).

Michael White was an Illinois Department of Corrections parolee since April 4, 2022 with an extensive criminal history, including several order of protection cases, aggravated battery, domestic battery, trespassing, stalking, theft/possession of stolen property, burglary, DUI, drug charges, and traffic charges.

The Zion Police department reminds the public that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force (LCMCTF) of the shooting investigation at approximately 7:29 a.m., and the Coroner’s Office responded to the scene.

The deceased gunshot victim has been identified as 20-year-old Jaylen Crump of Zion. An autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office on January 18, 2023. Autopsy results indicate that Ms. Crump died from a gunshot wound of the head.

The Zion Police Department and Lake County Major Crime Task Force continue to investigate the homicide. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Zion Police Department at 847-872-8000.
