WRONG-WAY CRASH KILLS 2
Illinois State Police responded about 2:00 a.m. Sunday, January 22, 2023 to a report of a wrong-way driver in the northbound lanes of Route 53 headed south from Golf Road. Two minutes later at 2:04 a.m. Illinois State Police were notified that a head-on crash occurred in the northbound lanes of Route 53 just south of Biesterfield Road. Firefighters and paramedics from Elk Grove Village and Itasca responded about 2:04 a.m. to report of the wrong-way head-on crash on Route 53 near Elk Grove Village.
When firefighters and paramedics arrived, Illinois State Police troopers were doing CPR for a crash victim on the right shoulder, and another victim was on the left shoulder. All northbound lanes of Route 53 were blocked. An Illinois State Police trooper reported victims in both cars had life-threatening injuries.
A silver Toyota and a black Honda Civic were involved in the crash — awaiting confirmation from Illinois State Police regarding which vehicle was driven the wrong way on Route 53.
Northbound I-290 WEST traffic was being diverted off at Biesterfield Road during crash rescue and investigation operations.
Illinois Route 53 runs parallel with I-290 on Rohlwing Road south of Biesterfield. At Biesterfield Road and to the north in both directions, Illinois Route 53 runs concurrently with I-290, and includes an interchange at Illinois Route 72 and a bridge over Illinois Route 58. The northern terminus of I-290 is at the I-90 interchange, but the expressway continues as Route 53. There are also Route 53 interchanges at Illinois Route 62, Kirchoff Road, Euclid Avenue, Northwest Highway (US-14), Palatine Road, and Dundee Road. Illinois Route 53 becomes the Illinois Route 53 Spur north of Dundee Road, but also runs concurrently with Illinois Route 68 west of the expressway, and then concurrently with US-12 to Hicks Road in Palatine. Route 53 runs concurrently with Hicks Road until the northern terminus at Route 83 in Long Grove.
Although a witness reported the wrong-way driver southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 53 at Golf Road, there was no information available regarding where the wrong-way driver entered the northbound lanes of Route 53.
