Police tactical units began a police operation in Round Lake just before 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2022 for a possible barricaded subject, who police wanted to investigate regarding a homicide in Fox Lake earlier on Monday night. A person of interest was placed in custody near a manufactured home in the Cambridge Courts neighborhood about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded about 9:35 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2022 to a report of shots fired with a shooting of a male victim at a condominium building in the block of 0-99 Mineola Road in Fox Lake. The male gunshot victim was dead at the scene. Lake County Major Crime Task Force indicated the man was 77 years-old and lived at the residence.
Following an investigation, police discovered that the victim in Fox Lake was shot with a rifle, and that the suspect fled in a light-colored minivan with heavy front-end damage. The minivan, the suspect, and a female passenger were reported to have traveled westbound on Mineola Road after the shooting. The investigation led police to the Cambridge Courts neighborhood, 775 West Long Lake Drive in Round Lake. The entrance to the manufactured homes neighborhood is at Long Lake Drive and Nasa Drive.
The person who reported the shots fired in Fox Lake, via a 911 call, informed dispatchers that a male and female entered a minivan and fled from the scene immediately following the shooting. Fox Lake Police issued a regional police broadcast (ISPERN) to local law-enforcement to advise of the incident and the description of the individuals/vehicle that fled from the scene. Due to the nature of the incident, Fox Lake Police requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
A preliminary investigation indicated the shooting victim invited the woman over to his home. While she was at his residence, the man entered and shot the victim. The woman and the man then fled in the minivan.
A short time later, Round Lake Police Officers responded to an unrelated call in the block of 300 Lunar Drive, Round Lake. The Round Lake officers saw a minivan and recognized the description from the regional alert issued by Fox Lake Police Department. Also, Round Lake Police Officers were familiar with the male ‘person of interest’ who normally drives the minivan, and knew he lived at a residence in the block of 300 block of Lunar Drive. Round lake Police Officers established a perimeter around his residence sometime before 1:00 a.m.

Due to the circumstances, Round Lake Police requested the assistance of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) to assist in apprehending the male suspect. NIPAS tactical personnel were on the scene, and just prior to NIPAS deploying an apprehension operation, the male suspect exited the residence and surrendered to Round Lake Police. The surrender occurred about 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2022. Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) mutual aid police officers also responded to the Round Lake scene, and protected the perimeter from intrusion by outsiders, and operated to support the NIPAS operations, and the public in the area.
The male suspect is in custody and speaking with Task Force investigators. The male suspect told police that the woman was sleeping inside. She was found safe and was secured. Initially, there was no indication that she was a suspect, and there was no confirmation whether the female knew the victim, or whether the meeting at the condo was some type of arranged meeting.
The homicide remains under investigation by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and Fox Lake Police Department. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force did not initially release the identity of the suspect nor the female accompanying the suspect.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy for the shooting victim.
Based on preliminary information, this incident appears to be targeted and there is no known threat to the surrounding community, according to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
