Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 2:38 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2022 to a report of a shooting at Benito Juarez High School, 2150 South Laflin Street, Chicago.
Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics discovered four total victims located near Benito Juarez Community Academy when they were struck by gunfire. There are no offenders in custody. Area Three Detectives are investigating.
A male victim, age 14, was struck in the head and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A male victim, age 15, was struck in the head and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A male victim, age 15, was struck in the thigh and shoulder and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Stroger Hospital initially reported in good condition.
A female victim, age 15, sustained a graze wound to the thigh and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Stroger Hospital initially reported in good condition.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office released the identity of the 15 year-old male as Brandon Perez. WGN obtained from family members the identify of the 14 year-old as Nathan Billegas.
In an early report, two people were reported shot inside the school, and one gunshot victim was reported outside the school. A Chicago Fire Department EMS Plan 1 was activated, but initially only three victims were found at the school.
A gunshot victim was also reported located on Cermak Road. No confirmation was reported for the location on Cermak Road as of 2:55 p.m. Ambulances were staged at Cermak Road and Laflin Street.
By 3:00 p.m. Friday, one victim was reported dead at the scene, one victim with life-threatening injuries, and two more victims — conditions initially unknown.
Police did not initially release where the victims that were killed were located when they were shot.
Chicago police say that the three male victims were targeted, and that the female victim was an innocent bystander that was hit. A witness reported hearing 6 to 8 gunshots.
Chicago police urge that if you see the suspect in question, dial 911; give your location, direction of travel and a quick description, including clothing, approximate height, weight, vehicle, etc.
