Police, firefighters and paramedics from Lake Zurich responded about 11:49 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2022 to a report of a pedestrian down on Rand Road near Popeyes, 742 South Rand Road in Lake Zurich.
Police on arrival discovered a victim down in the road in the southbound lanes of Rand Road (US-12 EAST). CPR was being administered to the victim before police, firefighters and paramedics arrived. No vehicle was located at the scene.
UPDATE: Lake Zurich police responded about 11:43 p.m. Saturday to a report of a male subject walking in the roadway in the block of 700 South Rand Road. Upon arrival police observed a dark colored SUV strike the male subject. The vehicle continued southbound on Rand Road. Police stopped to help the victim, instead of following the SUV. According to the Lake Zurich Police Department, police officers performed lifesaving efforts on the subject until Lake Zurich Fire Department paramedics arrived to render aid. The victim, a male in his late thirties, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Lake Zurich Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team are actively investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Colin Gaffney at 847-719-1690 x 6126.
A Lake Zurich Fire rescue ambulance remained at the scene during part of the initial police investigation.
Snowfall was on and off during day and night on Saturday, December 17, 2022, but no snow was accumulated on Rand Road at the time of the crash.
The southbound lanes of Rand Road (US-12 EAST) were shut down at June Terrace during rescue operations, and during the extended crash investigation with MCAT on the scene. In the vicinity of the crash scene, Rand Road is a four-lane highway with a grass median, and extra turn lanes for right turns and left turns. Southbound Rand Road has a narrow hard shoulder, and then a curb in the right lane near LA Fitness.
The Speed Limit of US-12 EAST is 50 MPH, posted near June Terrace, where there are stoplights at the intersection.
There is a sidewalk on the south side of Rand Road about 25 to 30 feet from the edge of the right lane of southbound Rand Road (US-12 EAST). The sidewalk runs from June Terrace to the property where the LA Fitness is located, and continues east almost to the intersection of Rand Road and Old Rand Road.

Lake Zurich police did not initially provide a press release (as of Monday, December 19, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.). A source from the Village of Lake Zurich confirmed that there was a hit-and-run crash, and that a person died at the scene, but would not provide any details about the victim.
Calls to the Lake Zurich Police Department were not returned, after a statement from police staff Sunday indicated that a press release was in development.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office would not provide any details about the incident in a phone call, but stated that a press release would be released this afternoon regarding this incident.
There was no information available to CARDINAL NEWS regarding whether there was any vehicle description, or whether any vehicle debris from collision damage was recovered at the scene.
