Police and firefighters from Maywood responded about 3:16 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2022 to a report of a fire in a vacant church building at 1642 South 15th Avenue in Maywood. Upon arrival firefighters discover smoke coming from the rear of the building, according to WGN News.
A MABAS Division 20 Box Alarm #300 was activated at 3:20 p.m. which assigned several firefighters with equipment from nearby west suburban communities to the scene. The fire department response was elevated to a third level MABAS Box Alarm.
Command reported the fire started to darken down about 4:40 p.m. after applying three master streams and four hand lines on the fire.
The box alarm was struck out at 5:36 p.m.
Early reports indicated there were no injuries. The fire scene was near the intersection of 15th Avenue and Harrison Street just north of the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290).
Weather observations at the official NWS Chicago station at O’Hare International Airport were … Air Temperature 22°F and Wind North at 3 MPH at 2:51 p.m., and no significant changes (Air Temperature 22°F/Wind N 5 MPH) at 3:51 p.m.
The new building for the Rock of Ages Baptist Church, built around 1995, is located at 1309 Madison Street in Maywood — about five blocks away — northeast of the fire scene.
