Police, firefighters, divers and paramedics from Des Plaines responded about 3:04 p.m. Thursday, December 22, 2022 to a report of a vehicle in a pond at Mount Prospect Road and Howard Street in Des Plaines.
Multiple callers reported by 3:06 p.m. that all people were out of the pickup truck and out of the water. The two people that were in the pickup truck were sheltered in another heated vehicle.
The Elk Grove Village Fire Department boat for water rescues was also assigned to the call, but was held up when it was learned that all people were out of the water.
Battalion Chief 61 on arrival reported a small Chevy pickup truck was in the water, and confirmed that all people were out of the water. One person was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for assessment and observation.
The pond is located at the northeast corner of Mount Prospect Road and Howard Street, just north of Interstate 90. There are no road curves in the area, and the Speed Limit is 40 MPH along Mount Prospect Road, according to Google Maps Street View.
The crash occurred during the middle of a snow storm associated with a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service Chicago. As part of the Winter Storm Warning, drivers were warned that “falling or blowing snow” would “result in white out conditions with zero visibility at times, making travel extremely difficult” and that roads would “likely quickly become ice covered” as temperatures would rapidly fall Thursday afternoon. Observations at the nearest National Weather Service reporting station at O’Hare International Airport reported at 2:51 p.m. an air temperature of 13°F and falling, a Wind Chill of -4°F, Winds 17 MPH and gusting to 30 MPH, and snow falling with freezing fog. The most recent above-freezing temperature reading before the crash was 33°F at 10:51 a.m.
