Police, firefighters and paramedics from Chicago responded about 5:44 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2022 to a report of a house fire in the block of 1900 North Sawyer Avenue Chicago.
Engine 43’s crew on arrival reported they have a 3-story frame with heavy fire at the back of the building. A Still and Box Alarm was activated on orders of Battalion Chief 17 at 5:49 a.m. Engine 43 reported that they learned that one male lives in the house by himself. Battalion Chief 17 reported a 2 1/2-story frame, 30×50, with back porches going. Fire crews were forcing entry, a main aerial was going up, and two lines were led out by 5:52 AM.
Battalion Chief 17 reported a stop on the exposure building, and a hazard of power lines down in an alley at the back of the home. The fire was burning on all three floors. A primary search was underway with hoarder conditions top to bottom at 6:04 a.m. but about 6:07 a.m. a firefighter fell off of a ladder, and because of fire conditions, firefighters went to defensive operations.
An EMS Plan 1 was activated about 6:07 a.m. and was secured at 6:23 a.m. A MAYDAY and a 2-11 Alarm were also activated around 6:07 a.m. The MAYDAY was secured in short time after PAR.
One firefighter was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Stroger Hospital Code Red, but was later reported to have a minor injury, according to CFD Media.
Overhaul was underway with the fire under control by 6:32 a.m. Firefighters went interior by 6:37 a.m. but could not perform a complete search of the home because of conditions. One man was found dead inside the home during search operations inside the home.
