Police, firefighters and paramedics from Zion responded about 9:32 p.m. Thursday, November 24, 2022 to report of a single vehicle crash into a tree and a pole near the Ace Hardware store, 2660 Sheridan Road in Zion.
Upon arrival police, firefighters and paramedics discovered a single vehicle crash with a tree and a pole with severe damage, and two people trapped in severely damaged vehicle. The crash did not involved the actual building at the shopping center, according to fire command.
Witnesses reported that than an Infiniti EX35 left the roadway, striking several trees and a light pole before coming to rest. The driver, a 38-year-old male from Waukegan, and the sole passenger, a 40-year-old female from Zion, were entrapped in the vehicle with significant injuries and required extrication.
Waukegan firefighters responded with a heavy rescue squad for extrication. Zion fire firefighters were also assisted by mutual aid crews from Gurnee, and North Chicago.
Both patients were extricated by 10:30 p.m., and then transported to area hospitals. The female passenger succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to Zion Police Department.
A witness at the scene reported that CPR was administered to one of the victims, and that both patients were treated for life-threatening injuries.
Because of the severity of the crash, the Zion Police Department asked for assistance from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) to lead the investigation. Zion ESDA provided traffic control and road closure assistance. ComEd and Hometown Electric were also requested to the crash scene to address the property damage and begin repairs to equipment.
Apparently the driver was traveling southbound on Sheridan Road approaching 27th Street, but crashed into a light pole and tree near the sidewalk in front of Ace Hardware at a high rate of speed.
Lake County MCAT (Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team) was on the scene assisting Zion Police Department with the investigation before 11:15 p.m.
