Elmhurst police are investigating two incidents of attempted theft from vehicles involving armed suspects in north Elmhurst in the area of North Avenue and York Road. Witnesses saw two separate attempts of vehicle theft, vehicle burglary and/or vehicle trespassing. Three offenders — at least one armed — attempted to get into numerous vehicles, and successfully entered at least one vehicle.
Elmhurst police responded about 7:24 a.m. Sunday, November 6, 2022 to a report that a witness observed suspects attempting to enter an unoccuppied parked car in the block of 100 East Columbia, and then leave. Minutes later at approximately 7:29 a.m. a witness observed the suspects attempting to enter a car in the block of 300 North Larch Avenue and then leave west on North Ave in a dark sedan, now identified as a black 2019 Kia Optima 4-door sedan.
The suspects were described as three male/black suspects, with possibly another suspect driver with no description available. The suspect were described as wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks. At least one of the suspects was seen holding a handgun during the attempted thefts.
The City of Elmhurst communicated a CodeRED message to alert residents while police worked at the scenes.
Police searched for the black sedan and suspects, but it was believed they are no longer in the area. Elmhurst Police Department reported they are working with other suburban agencies that reported similar incidents Sunday morning following the incidents in Elmhurst. Police are searching for the suspects in Elmhurst wanted for the investigation of aggravated assault with firearms.
DuPage County Sheriff’s police reported an incident that occurred about 8:07 a.m. Sunday involving a similar vehicle description with three or four armed male/black suspects wearing ski masks involved in an attempted vehicle theft in the block of 300 Sunrise Avenue in the Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills area.
Elmhurst Police Department urges citizens to call 911 immediately if any suspicious activity is observed in neighborhoods.
