Police, firefighters and paramedics from Charlottesville responded about 10:16 p.m. EST Sunday, November 13, 2022 to a shots fired call at a parking garage at the Culbreth Parking Garage, 130 Culbreth Road in Charlottesville. Police on arrival discovered a mass shooting occurred on a charter bus with members of the University of Virginia football team on board. Two victim were dead on the bus, and the third fatality victim died at the hospital.
The mass shooting occurred on the bus at the University of Virginia campus. Three students were killed, and two individuals were injured. All three of the students that were shot and killed were members of the University of Virginia football team. One of the wounded was listed in Critical Condition and one was listed in Good Condition.
The shooter suspect is identified as former football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. He was taken into custody about 75 miles southeast of the shooting scene. Jones was taken into custody late Monday morning, November 14, 2022, in the Darbytown, Edgelawn area of east Henrico County, Virginia — southeast of Richmond, Virginia. His criminal history included investigation of hazing accusations and gun ownership or gun use issues.
According to WTVR, Jones is a current student at University of Virginia.
University president Jim Ryan released the identities of the victims killed as Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Davis Jr. Officials confirmed that the victims were shot on a charter bus within a parking garage.
A shelter in place alert for the University of Virginia campus was activated on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning — lasting about 12 hours.
Classes for UVA students were canceled on Monday. Charlottesville City Schools were also closed Monday.
