Police, firefighters and paramedics from Libertyville responded about 6:40 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2022 to a report of house fire at Golf Road and Cambridge Drive in Libertyville.
UPDATE: The residence in the block of 500 East Golf Road was determined to be unoccupied, according to Libertyville Fire Department.
Libertyville Fire Department also received a report of an explosion at the scene.
Firefighters reported seeing a smoke header while responding to the scene. Fire command on arrival reported a single-story fully-involved house fire, but when the flames were knocked down, firefighters discovered the house was a 2-story home.
Initially, there was no information available about the occupants of the home. The Illinois State Fire Marshal was requested to respond to the scene at around 7:00 p.m.. A video provided to news media showed a possible stream of accelerant burning in a trail in front of the home.
A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm #46-20 was activated at 7:52 p.m. Fire continued to burn in the basement, and firefighters used foam to attempt to extinguish the fire. Smoke was still pushing out of the home at 10:15 p.m., although the Box Alarm was struck out at 8:50 p.m.
A witness did not see firefighters enter the home before 10:00 p.m., and there was no fire radio traffic that indicated whether anyone was in the house. Most or all photos showed firefighters attacking the fire defensively (from outside of the home).
Fire and police authorities did not initially confirm whether the fire was suspicious.
