Police, firefighters and paramedics from Rolling Meadows responded about 11:39 a.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2022 to a report of a brush fire off the shoulder of northbound Route 53 south of Kirchoff Road Rolling Meadows.
Command on arrival reported a brush fire between the northbound lanes of Route 53 and Frontage Road, covering an area of about 75 feet by 25 feet and moving north. Northwest Central Dispatch System reported winds were 5-10 MPH from the southwest.
Firefighters set up the main aerial on their ladder truck and were prepared to use a fog nozzle to wet down the brush fire from above, but the aerial operation from the truck was not necessary.
Smoke blew across the Frontage Road, but did not blow across Route 53.
IDOT contractors were on the Route 53 shoulder north of the Bobwhite Court intersection with Frontage Road repairing a section of guardrail when a welding process apparently ignited the grass and brush. The fire was extinguished by 12:00 p.m.
