Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded about 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2022 to a report of a vehicle fire in a parking garage at 711 South Ashland Avenue in Chicago. Engine 103’s crew on arrival confirmed the reported a vehicle on fire in the garage.
Battalion Chief 4 on arrival reported an auto on fire in a 1-story truss garage, 40×100 square feet. Battalion 4 requested a Still and Box at 3:09 p.m. and reported that there was a problem with Engine 103’s pump. Crews got the pump working by 3:12 PM, but Battalion 4 reported the garage was fully-involved.
Staging for extra crews and apparatus was at Ashland and Harrison.
Battalion Chief 4 reported four handlines and two deck guns on the fire; and making pretty good progress by 3:19 PM.
A 2-11 Alarm was requested on order of 2-2-1 by 3:30 p.m.
Three master streams were set up at the front of the building, and three handlines on the fire at the back of the building.
Fire command began to release companies at about 4:42 p.m. Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the townhomes, neighborhoring townhomes and also prevented the fire from spreading to the St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church to the south of the fire scene.
Chicago police were needed for traffic control at the extra alarm fire in the Medical District in Garibaldi Square. The parking garage was a private garage for townhouse/condominium units in a multi-unit residential complex.
Initially, there were no reported injuries.
Winds were from the East and Northeast from 6 MPH to 9 MPH around the time that the fire scene was active, according the the National Weather Station at Midway International Airport. Weather conditions included light rain, fog and mist.
