Lake County Sheriff’s 911 Telecommunicators received a 911 call about 9:20 p.m. Monday, September 5, 2022, when telecommunicators could hear arguing on the line. Telecommunicators were able to track that 911 call to a body of water known as Columbia Bay, just off of Fox Lake. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area, via boat, and located a single boat in the water. They approached the boat and a 40-year-old woman ran from the cabin area underneath the boat, to the open deck area. The woman was crying and injured. Further investigation revealed the woman was on the boat with an acquaintance, Douglas J. Johnson, age 41, of the block of 34700 North Decorah Avenue, Ingleside. The woman told Johnson that she wished to go back to shore, so she could return to her family. This enraged Johnson and he elbowed the woman in the nose and choked her with his hands. Johnson was arrested on the boat and transported to shore via the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.
Douglas J. Johnson was subsequently charged with aggravated domestic battery involving strangulation, aggravated battery involving strangulation, and unlawful restraint.
Columbia Bay is located in the northeast corner of Fox Lake near Route 59 and Grand Avenue and near Lake Villa Township.
