A gofundme organizer, Joshua Black, has established a gofundme page for the funeral costs of homicide victims Ron and Renée Goldberg. Allegedly, they were killed by their son Barry M. Goldberg. Ron and Renée Goldberg were described as loving and caring parents and grandparents with infectious smiles and love of family.
The funeral service for Ron and Renée Goldberg is Friday, September 16, 2022.
“Thank you for the outpouring of support from all our friends, family, and the community. All the texts, calls, and IMs letting us know we are in your thoughts or prayers means so much to my family.
For those that don’t know what has occurred, my parents Ron & Renée Goldberg passed away yesterday. They were murdered by my own brother. My brother has struggled with mental illness over the past 4 years. He was living with my parents, who invested all their time, energy, and resources in attempting to get him the proper help. Tragically, they were never successful in finding the help he needed.
Bonnie, our children, and I are all still working on processing what has occurred while concurrently working on making funeral arrangements. For those who are out of town and would like to attend my parents’ funeral, we plan on holding it on Friday, September 16th. More specific details will be provided in the coming days.”
— Neil Goldberg (son of victims)
A suspect identified as Mr. Barry M. Goldberg, 45 years of age, residing at 1850 Green Bay Road, Highland Park has been charged with 2 counts of 1st Degree Murder following the deaths of his parents of penetrating wounds from a sharp object. Goldberg was immediately a person of interest in the homicide case, as he was located in the apartment where the victims were discovered stabbed to death. The victims were identified as Ronald Goldberg, age 79, and Renee Goldberg, age 74.
The facts of this case were reviewed with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, and Barry Goldberg was subsequently charged. In a bond hearing Thursday, September 8, 2022, a 19th Circuit Court of Lake County judge set bond for Barry Goldberg at $5 million.
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Highland Park responded about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2022 to a call for a psychiatric emergency at 1850 Green Bay Road in Highland Park. Police were first on the scene within two minutes, and immediately requested multiple ambulances respond to the scene. Police discovered blood at the scene under a door and forced entry through the apartment door. Two people were found not breathing and without a pulse inside the apartment unit. A third person that was also in the apartment unit was taken into custody. Firefighters and paramedics initially staged until about 10:23 a.m. when police determined the scene was secure.
The cause of injuries and cause of death were not initially released by authorities, but the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office stated at the bond hearing Thursday that police immediately noticed stab wounds, and found a large knife on the floor. Barry Goldberg, who was inside the apartment, had blood on his person. Barry Goldberg admitted that he stabbed his mother.
Also when police arrived to the apartment that was shared by the three people, someone yelled “don’t shoot” from behind the door.
The crime scene was considered part of an active investigation, and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was assigned to the scene.
Barry Goldberg’s next scheduled court date is a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5, 2022.
