Arlington Heights Catalytic Converter Theft Caught on Camera Near Arlington Heights Road and Thomas Street
A catalytic converter theft was reported in an event post on the Ring Neighbors App at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2022 at an apartment complex near Thomas Middle School. The crime is reported to have occurred at about 1:00 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2022 at or near a parking lot for apartment buildings located at Arlington Heights Road and Thomas Street, just west of Thomas Middle School in Arlington Heights, IL. Two video camera locations captured the crime and both videos were posted with the report on the Neighbors app.
A Ring security video captured images of a white Jeep Cherokee moving eastbound in an apartment parking lot at the southwest corner of Arlington Heights Road and Thomas Street. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee stopped next to a subcompact vehicle, and both vehicles were parked parallel to the thru-lane in the parking lot when the theft occurred. The subcompact car was parked parallel on the south side of the apartment parking lot, and just north of a medical office building parking lot at 1430 North Arlington Heights Road.
A least one suspect got out of the white Jeep Cherokee and inspected underneath the subcompact car with a flashlight, and then said, “get it.” Thirty seconds later a loud sawing noise began with one suspect under the vehicle. The saw was likely a reciprocating power saw, such as a Sawzall. The video indicates the theft occurred at about 1:04 to 1:06 a.m. The Neighbors app user narrative reported the white Jeep Cherokee was driven north on Arlington Heights Road about 1:01 a.m. and then west on Thomas Street about 1:02 a.m. Apparently, the suspects then turned left to go south on Evergreen Avenue and then east in the parking lot before they targeted the subcompact car.
The Neighbors app user did not initially indicate whether a police report was filed. The lot where the crime occurred is located between an apartment building and a medical office building. The title of the post indicated catalytic converters — plural — were stolen. The number of vehicles affected was not provided.
