Barrington High School (BHS) administrators received a report Friday morning, September 16, 2022 that a student was carrying a gun in one of the BHS school bathrooms. According to Barrington Community Unit School District 220 the suspicious report was received just before the school day began at Barrington High School Friday morning. Officials said, “out of an abundance of caution, the building was placed on immediate lockdown.”
The Barrington High School Police Resource Officer immediately responded and found the student was carrying a pellet gun underneath clothing. The student was taken into police custody, and was transported away from campus.
The campus appeared calm and normal at 9:20 a.m. and only one marked vehicle was parked on the south side of the building at 9:20 a.m. “At this point in time there is no threat at Barrington High School and classes have fully resumed,” according to a document dated Friday, September 16 that was posted without a timestamp on the official Barrington 220 Community Unit School District website.
“We understand that our students may need support in processing what happened today. Our Student Services center is available for students who may want to speak to our mental health professionals.
‘If you see something, say something,’ is a phrase that we share with our students often and this is an example of how reporting can help school administrators and law enforcement take immediate action to keep everyone safe.
As a reminder, we have a dedicated “See Something, Say Something” webpage and we encourage everyone to review this page and report an issue if something doesn’t seem right. You can also visit the district’s Safety 220 webpage to learn more about the safety measures the district has taken over the past several years.”
