Schaumburg Police responded about 2:25 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2022 to a parking lot in the block of 1300 North Roselle Road to a report of gunshots fired. Following an investigation, one male suspect in a group of two males was accused of battering a male and a female among a group of two males and two females, and then firing shots at one of the males. Both groups then left the scene in their two separate vehicles, and none of the people were injured.
A Schaumburg police officer located the vehicle involved in the shots fired call, and detained the driver and the suspected shooter for investigation. The second vehicle, with four occupants, was located a short time later. A thorough investigation revealed Suspect #1 (the suspected shooter), identified as Raza H. Zaidi, age 29, and Suspect #2 (the driver), identified as Surya Govindhakannan, age 19, entered the parking lot of the block of 1300 North Roselle Road, and that Raza Zaidi approached four persons standing near a vehicle. Both suspects were armed.
Details were outlined in a bond hearing today, Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
According to Cook County prosecutors, before the fight occurred, Raza and Surya arrived in Surya’s white Mercedes Benz. They entered the parking lot where a 29 year-old male, another male of an undisclosed age, a 27 year-old female, and a 24 year-old female were congregated near the other vehicle.
According to Schaumburg Police Department, Raza H. Zaidi started a verbal altercation with Victim #1 (the 29 year-old male). The argument quickly escalated to a physical fight. Raza battered two victims during the incident — a man and a woman. Raza then retrieved a .380 caliber handgun from Surya’s vehicle and fired three rounds at the 29 year-old male, missing him. One of the expelled rounds struck and entered the vehicle’s passenger cabin belonging to the other group where two people among the group were sitting.
Prosecutors said that during the argument, the 29 year-old male spoke Hindi to accused shooter Raza H. Zaidi, but Zaidi didn’t understand the language. After Victim #1 (the 29 year-old man) took off his belt in an attempt to scare Raza Zaidi, Raza retrieved the weapon from Surya’s Mercedes and fired three shots at the 29 year-old male. Also, the 27 year-old female was punched and knocked to the ground before the three shots were fired at the 29 year-old male.
Raza and Surya left the scene in Surya’s vehicle. An officer located Surya’s vehicle and conducted a traffic stop where two handguns were recovered from inside the vehicle. According to the Schaumburg Police Department, Raza H. Zaidi and Surya Govindhakannan do not have F.O.I.D cards and do not have Concealed Carry Cards.
Schaumburg police said the four victims did not know the two suspects prior to the shots fired incident, and the two armed suspects did not know the four victims.
The facts of the case were reviewed by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the following charges were authorized:
Raza H. Zaidi
- Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony), Four (4) Counts
- Attempted First Degree Murder (Class X Felony), Four (4) Counts
Sury Govindhakannan
- Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony), One (1) Count
Both suspects were scheduled to appear at the Cook County Circuit Court Third Municipal District Rolling Meadows Courthouse, May 4, 2022 for a bond hearing.
Raza H. Zaidi was ordered held without bond.
Sury Govindhakannan was ordered held on $10,000 bond.
A conviction of first degree murder carries a sentence of 6 to 30 years in prison, but the sentence increases 20 years if a firearm was discharged. Therefore, Raza H. Zaidi faces a sentence of 26 to 50 years for each count that results in a conviction.
