Illinois State Police began surveillance of an SUV and carjacking suspects about 5:30 a.m. on I-290 EAST near Racine, and a short time later on I-94 exiting at Roosevelt Road in Chicago. Police discovered a white 2019 Lexus RX350 occupied by five male/black suspects believed to be armed from an earlier aggravated vehicular hijacking in Chicago. The suspects got back on I-290 WEST, passing Morgan, Damen, California, Homan, Independence, and Laramie. Police activated emergency lights as the suspects headed north on Laramie after exiting on I-290 WEST. From Laramie, the suspects entered back on I-290 EAST. The suspects passed Cicero by about 5:50 a.m., and the suspects were passing Damen by 5:52 a.m. The suspects were driving with their headlights off, and entered southbound I-94, and then passed 18th Street by about 5:54 a.m.
The suspects picked up speeds to 120 MPH around 35th Street and were at 47th Street by about 5:56 a.m. The suspects entered the Skyway about 5:58 a.m. with no traffic conditions on the Skyway. The suspects broke through the tollbooth and then exited at 92nd Street and then got back on the Skyway northbound and broke through another tollbooth. The suspects were in the local lanes near 59th Street as traffic conditions transitioned from light traffic to heavy traffic.
Traffic conditions transitioned to moderate traffic while the pursuit was traveling around 107 MPH and passing from 43rd Street through 35th Street. Further north, traffic conditions transitioned to light traffic. After Canalport, the suspects went back to I-290 WEST at about 6:08 a.m. The suspects exited I-290 WEST to travel north on Morgan Street. A PIT maneuver (pursuit intervention technique) was used about 6:10 a.m. near Morgan Street and Tilden Street. Five suspects bailed out and a foot pursuit began. Three suspects were in custody by about 6:15 a.m. The incident was secured by 6:22 a.m. with the weapon, carjacked SUV, and three suspects in custody. One additional suspect was captured about 6:27 a.m. One suspect possibly remained at large.
