Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Beach Park Fire Department resonded about 9:20 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2022 to a report of a child pedestrian hit by an SUV on Sheridan Road north of Chaney Avenue in Beach Park. Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics discovered that a 7 year-old boy and his dog had been hit by a Ford Explorer SUV.
The child was treated at the scene by paramedics, and was transported by ambulance to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical injuries. The child is scheduled to be transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for further treatment. The driver of the SUV did not initially report any injuries.
The dog was believed to be deceased and was removed from the scene by bystanders.
Initial investigation indicates a silver 2005 Ford Explorer driven by a 29-year-old female from Beach Park was traveling northbound on Sheridan Road north of Chaney Avenue in Beach Park. A 7-year-old male and dog, both of whom were also from Beach Park, entered the roadway on Sheridan Road north of Chaney Avenue and were struck by the northbound Ford Explorer.
The driver of the Ford Explorer was the sole occupant in the SUV and remained at the scene.
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the Ford Explorer is cooperating in the investigation. Impairment is not believed to be a factor.
The investigation will continue through the Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigation Unit. The Speed Limit on Sheridan Road at the crash scene is 40 MPH according to images on Google Maps Street View. Sheridan Road/Hiawatha Pioneer Trail (Route 137) is a four-lane highway with a single two-way center left turn lane at the scene of the vehicle, pedestrian crash.
