Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Long Grove Fire Protection District responded about 3:20 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2022 to a report of a crash with injuries at Route 53 and Schaeffer Road, Long Grove. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located two vehicles, which collided head-on.
Rescuers discovered four people injured in the crash. The driver of a Chevrolet Cruz was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, with critical, life-threatening injuries. She currently remains in the hospital with serious injuries that are no longer believed to be life-threatening. Two passengers in the Chevrolet Cruz — a 3-year-old girl and a 22-year-old man, both of Waukegan — were transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Honda sustained minor injuries and declined transport to a hospital.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2013 Chevrolet Cruz, driven by a 24-year-old woman of Waukegan, was traveling northbound on Route 53. The driver crossed into the southbound lanes of traffic and struck a southbound 2009 Honda Accord, driven by a 34-year-old woman of Hanover Park, head-on. It is possible the driver of the Chevrolet swerved to avoid a different vehicle turning left onto Schaeffer Road.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
