Firefighters and police from Denver responded about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2022 to a fire alarm activation and a report of a fire at Mile High Stadium, 1701 Bryant in Denver, Colorado.
Significant fire and smoke damaged the stadium. The fire occurred in a suite area and third level seating area. The sprinkler system was activated, but witnesses said the fire appeared to be spreading rapidly before firefighters arrived. The sprinkler system is believed to have functioned to hold the fire in check, but “could not get ahead of the fire,” according to Denver Fire Capt Greg Pixley. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before 3:00 p.m. The fire affected about 1,000 square feet inside the stadium, including six rows of seats in two sections of the stadium.
Denver Fire Capt. Greg Pixley explained that the seating material is flammable, with the material of the seats has the capability of burning at high temperature and spreading rapidly. During peak operations, there were 75 firefighters fighting the fire as part of a Second Alarm assignment. High winds were also a factor. Winds around the time of the fire were from the northwest ranging from 9 MPH to 14 MPH with gusts from 0 MPH to 23 MPH. Winds had gusted up to 29 MPH to 32 MPH from the north and northwest around 12 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. according to observations at the Buckley Air Force Base Airport.
Denver Fire Department is investigating.
According to a statement from Empower Field at Mile High, there were no injuries, the stadium was evacuated, and the “small fire” occurred in a construction zone near the East Club Lounge.
