Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech to citizens that the Ukrainian government believes Wednesday, February 16, 2022 is when Russia will strike, and declared the day will be a union day. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky encouraged all citizens to raise flags and show the world their unity.
As recently as Monday, January 24, 2022, Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said that the movement of Russian troops near Ukraine’s border was “not news.” Danilov added, “we don’t see any grounds for statements about a full-scale offensive on our country.” An estimated 100,000 Russian troops massed near Ukraine by January 24, 2022, and around 130,000 Russian troops were estimated near Ukraine.

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said today that Putin could move with little to no warning. Kirby did not talk about specifics, but said that the U.S. continues to see Putin advance his readiness, and improve his capabilities, and provide himself more options should he decide to take military action in Ukraine.
Kirby said the U.S. will not act unilaterally, but that the United States contribution to a NATO response force “will be ready to go.”
Russian forces have surrounded Ukraine with recent estimates as high as 130,000 troops.
In late March–early April 2021, the Russian military moved large quantities of arms and equipment from western and central Russia, and as far away as Siberia, into occupied Crimea and the Pogonovo training facility south of Voronezh. A Janes intelligence specialist identified fourteen Russian military units from the Central Military District that had moved into the vicinity of the Russo-Ukrainian border, and called it the largest unannounced military movement since the 2014 invasion of Crimea.
