Gary police responded about 12:57 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2022 to a report of shots fired in the block of 400 Lincoln Street in Gary. A Gary police officer was shot in the neighborhood of the “shots fired” call. According to the Gary Police Department, Sergeant William Fazekas, a 32-year veteran of the Gary Police Department was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center University of Chicago Emergency Department and Trauma Center where he was listed in stable condition. The details of the shooting were not released by the Gary Police Department.
UPDATE: Two suspects began firing at a Gary police officers when he approached with his police emergency lights activated. The police officer returned fire, but was struck. One suspect was captured, and one suspect was at large Monday evening.
Lincoln Street was closed between 4th Avenue and 5th Avenue, and roads are congested in the area, including Grant Street, Buchanan Street, and 5th Avenue.
The FBI GRIT Task Force is on the scene. GRIT is the acronym for Gang Response Investigative Team formed with the FBI and local law agencies to solve problems related to gang violence and drug-related crimes in northwest Indiana.
FBI GRIT has joined forces with the Gary Police Department, Hammond Police Department, Hobart Police, Merrillville Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and the Indiana State Police.
