A cold morning is forecast for Monday, January 3, 2022, but forecasters at NWS Chicago are watching that temps will be slowly warming aloft overnight. How much affect the warmer upper air may have on temps is uncertain, so for now low temperatures remain in the forecast. For Chicago and the immediate metro area, temperatures likely to stay in the low/mid single digits, but above zero.
Northwest winds will slowly diminish through the evening and will likely become light and variable across much of the area by daybreak. However, with any light breeze, wind chills may still dip to 10 to 15 below zero which is above local wind chill criteria of 20 below, so not expecting to meet local wind chill advisory criteria. High temperatures on Monday are likely to rebound back into the lower to mid 20s, though somewhat dependent on how cold low temps dip tonight (Thanks El Niño?).

Very cold tonight and again by late week. Slightly milder on Tuesday and Wednesday, though gusty winds will also make those days feel colder than the actual temperatures. Flurries or light snow are possible Wednesday and Thursday, with little accumulation expected. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/jXzQReZ000
