CBS Los Angeles has published Wednesday, January 5, 2022, the first reported case of flurona (in Los Angeles County). Flurona, which has also been spelled Florona and Fluorona, is described as the medical condition of having an infection of both influenza and coronavirus at the same time. CBS Los Angeles reports the first case was detected at the 911 COVID-19 Testing center across the street from the Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles, California.
The patient was described as a teenage boy with mild symptoms who tested positive for both flu and COVID. CBS Los Angeles reports that he and his family had just returned from a trip to Cabo San Lucas, and he was the only member experiencing symptoms, and the only family member to test positive for both viruses. One of his parents tested positive for COVID-19.
The testing site, run by 911 COVID Testing, says they’ve seen about a 30% positivity rate among the people tested in the past few days, along with a few confirmed cases of the flu.
911 COVID Testing site began using the dual tests when people who had tested negative for COVID returned to the testing site because they were still experiencing symptoms.
According to a Newsweek report on December 31, 2021, Israel reported the first case of dual infection causing in influenza and COVID-19 in an unvaccinated pregnant woman with mild symptoms. The pregnant woman tested positive for both conditions at Beilinson Hospital.
In South Florida, pediatrician Dr. Jorge Perez said some children are testing positive for influenza and COVID-19 or RSV and COVID-19. RSV is human respiratory syncytial virus, which is a single strand RNA virus, which can cause severe illness. Following initial an initial infection via the eyes or nose, the virus infects the epithelial cells of the upper and lower airway, causing inflammation, cell damage, and airway obstruction.
Flu and COVID-19 symptoms, especially the Omicron variant, overlap in many ways with respiratory symptoms, weakness, and nasal congestion. So-called expert response to the dual infection have ranged from “there is nothing to be concerned about” to the dual conditions could be “catastrophic to the immune system.”
