On January 5, 2022, at approximately 10:45 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Route 173 west of Pedersen Lane, Unincorporated Antioch, for a traffic crash with injuries. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located three vehicles, one being a semi-truck, with major damage.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by a female, was traveling westbound on Route 173. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Chevrolet drifted into the eastbound lanes of traffic and was struck head-on by an eastbound 2007 Volvo Semi, pulling a 53’ trailer, driven by a 50-year-old man, of Ontario, Canada. The driver of the Volvo swerved prior to impact, in an attempt to avoid the collision, however the vehicles still collided. Immediately following the impact, the Chevrolet was struck by a 2002 Toyota Celica, driven by a 20-year-old man of Unincorporated Antioch. The driver of the Toyota was also traveling westbound, directly behind the Chevrolet.
The driver of the Chevrolet was pronounced deceased at the scene. Positive identification of the female is pending. The drivers of the Volvo and Toyota were uninjured.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and are scheduling an autopsy for the female. The Illinois State Police also responded to the scene to inspect the condition of the semi-truck.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit and Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Speed Limit on Route 173 west of Pedersen Lane is 55 MPH, and is 45 MPH east of Pedersen Lane, according to Google Maps Street View images captured October 2018.
