Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and Gurnee firefighters and paramedics responded about 12:00 p.m. November 20, 2021 to a report of a traffic crash with injuries on Route 41 at Stearns School Road, Unincorporated Gurnee.
Upon arrival deputies, firefighters and paramedics discovered that the driver of a Hyundai was uninjured, and the female driver of a Subaru initially appeared to have minor injuries. Shortly after arriving at Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, the woman’s condition deteriorated, and she appeared to be paralyzed from the neck down. Due to the severity of the injuries, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit was activated.
Preliminary investigation shows a 2022 Hyundai, being driven by a 58-year-old man of Mount Prospect, was traveling northbound on Route 41. The driver of the Hyundai began making a left turn onto westbound Stearns School Road in front of the oncoming 2020 Subaru, which was traveling southbound on Route 41. The 2020 Subaru, driven by a 64-year-old woman of Gurnee crash and the Hyundai, driven by the 58 year-old man of Mount Prospect crash in the intersection.
About 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2021, crash investigators learned the woman passed away at the hospital.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office scheduled an autopsy on the woman for Monday, November 22, 2021.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
The Route 41 and Stearns School Road intersection is a T-style intersection with an obtuse angle for the left turn from northbound Route 41 to westbound Stearns School Road. The intersection has a reputation for frequent crashes. Route 41 is a divided highway with a grass median and a Speed Limit on Route 41 of 45 MPH. The left turn lane from northbound Rout 41 to westbound Stearns School Road is 600 feet long and is located in the position of the grass median which ends about 840 feet before the intersection.
