O’HARE FORECAST …
Today: Sunny, with a high near 66. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. West southwest wind around 5 mph becoming northeast after midnight.
Tuesday: A 20 percent chance of rain after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 45. Northeast wind around 10 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a pattern change is waiting in the wings later this week, but not until another day of highs into the 60s area wide to kick off the work week followed by a few merely mild days. The only forecast item of note is a low chance for light rain on Tuesday afternoon, so not an impact concern.
The very impressive low level thermal ridge under 150-200 m positive height anomaly at 500 mb was sampled well by the 00z RAOBs (Radiosonde observations), with ILX 925 mb temp of +18C(!) nearly top of the chart for November. It won’t be this warm at 925 mb today as the thermal ridge exits east, but afternoon highs should end up similar to Sunday’s mid to upper 60s given the higher starting point (40s to near 50). Cirrus clouds will arrive later, but are not expected to have an effect on temperatures. A weak cold front trailing from low pressure over James Bay will push in from the northwest later this afternoon through the evening and then become quasi-stationary bisecting Chicagoland tonight.
More clouds coming this afternoon, tonight and tomorrow. With minimal thermal advection and increasing and lowering mid- level clouds tonight, another mild night is in store, ranging from the mid to upper 40s outside Chicago and lower 50s in the city. Lower level moisture should increase along the front into Tuesday as northeast winds north of it are opposed by light southerlies south, causing a lowering stratus deck. Weak wave/trough along the front will help it gradually ease south through the day, with winds gradually flipping to northerly even southeast CWA.
Meanwhile, modest large scale ascent from short-wave energy and jet exit will couple with decent mid-level f-gen mesoscale forcing to probably overcome a dry wedge between 700-600 mb and result in a narrow area of light rain. Given uncertainty in honing in on the location of small scale f-gen driven banding, have maintained slight chance probability of precipitation in the afternoon Tuesday. In reality, only some locations underneath narrow rain band would see rain, which will be refined with subsequent updates today and tonight. Mostly cloudy skies Tuesday will keep temperatures cooler than the past few days, but still a few to several degrees above normal after the mild start.
