Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 2021 to a report that a man on a rider mower had been hit by a vehicle at Route 59 and Amber Way Fox Lake Hills, unincorporated Lake Villa.
Upon arrival Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and Lake Villa Fire Protection District paramedics found a man critically injured. The man was treated at the scene and transported via ambulance to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The operator of the riding mower sustained critical, life-threatening injuries, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver and three minor children that were inside the vehicle that hit the rider mower did not initially report any injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 62-year-old man, of unincorporated Lake Villa, was operating a Craftsman riding mower on Route 59. This area of Route 59 is unlit, there were no lights activated on the riding mower, and the man was wearing dark colored clothing. The riding mower was struck by a southbound 2010 Ford Escape, driven by a 40-year-old woman of Spring Grove.
The crash investigation is ongoing by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit. The Speed Limit on Route 59 is 40 MPH according to a Google Maps Street View image.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced at 7:12 p.m. CDT that Route 59 was closed in both directions from Monaville Road to Route 132 in unincorporated Lake Villa due to a serious traffic crash. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, traffic was impacted the for three hours for an on-scene crash investigation. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office recommended motorists use an alternate route.
