Stabbing After Fight on PACE Bus on Milwaukee Ave Near Libertyville and Vernon Hills
Police from Libertyville and Vernon Hills, and firefighters and paramedics from Countryside FPD and Libertyville Fire Department responded about 8:04 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2021 to a report of a stabbing victim located at Walgreens at 1470 South Milwaukee in Libertyville. Police secured the area, and paramedics were with the victim within about three minutes.
Police and paramedics discovered that a homeless man, age 58, suffered multiple stab wounds apparently while riding on a Pace bus. Police were also told that the offender was on the scene. Police apprehended the suspect, and he was identified as Errol Shakes, age 51, who is also homeless. Initially, the location where Errol Shakes was apprehended was not disclosed.
Paramedics treated 58 year-old male victim and transported him to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Apparently there was a fight on a PACE Bus, and initially there was some confusion whether the victim was stabbed outside of the bus or inside the bus — possibly on Milwaukee Avenue just south of Greggs Parkway.
Also, there was some confusion regarding where the victim was initially located after he was stabbed. Initially a caller incorrectly reported the victim was at the Walgreens at 261 West Townline Road in Vernon Hills, which caused a dispatch of Vernon Hills police and Countryside FPD firefighters and paramedics to the Walgreens on Townline Road about 2.6 miles away. When the correction was made, Countryside FPD firefighters and paramedics continued to the correct scene at the Walgreens near Milwaukee Avenue and Greggs Parkway, and Libertyville police, firefighters and paramedics were also dispatched.
After investigation and discovery regarding where the stabbing occurred, the jurisdiction was determined to be the responsibility of the Vernon Hills Police Department, not the Libertyville Police Department, as earlier reported.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Vernon Hills Police Department detectives at 847-247-4891.
